FAQs

Q. What type of commitment is there when I join the Company Competition Team?

Dancers are required to take three classes per week ie. two technique classes and one company class.

Q. What are 'technique classes' and what is a 'company class'?

Technique classes are core classes where dancers develop their dance technique, lines, transitions, extension, flexibility, and progress through learning different movements etc.. All dancers are required to take one Ballet technique class in addition to the technique class of the dance company genre, (For example:Jazz Company members' technique classes include ballet and jazz of their their appropriate level). In addition to these two technique classes, dancers take one 30 minute company class per week. The company class is where the dancers work on their competition choreography/routine to perfect it for competition. (All required classes' attendance is mandatory if dancer is on performance team.)

Q. How long is the session for dancers in the Performance Company?

Your commitment will be approximately from mid September through June (depending on when the final performance is scheduled) The sessions of classes for the performance company follows the same schedule as the recreational classes at Granville Dance & Music Academy. Most sessions are either 8/10 or 12 weeks depending on the time of year. The class times of company and technique classes may vary with sessions.

Q. How is tuition paid for dancers in the Performance Company?

Dancers pay for their technique classes per session and the tuition amounts are listed on the website. Tuition for company classes is $40 monthly and is charged on the 15th of the month. Competition choreography fees are also due at the start of the session. GDMA will make you aware of choreography fee totals once total number of dancers per group are finalized. Private lessons (solo/duet/trio) are also available for performance company or extra practice.

Q. When should my dancer expect to compete?

Dancers will start learning their competition routine immediately once they begin their company classes. Dancers will not compete until the Springtime/ April. It will take from the Fall until early Spring to perfect the routines and have them competition ready.

Q. What other fees are associated with the performance company?

The other fees are:

1. Competition entry fee(s) not due until later date (dependent upon selected competition's terms/timeline). Fees vary per competition.

2. Costume fees for each performance number/costume. These will be kept as reasonable as possible and we have a very good reasonably priced online costume company which we use.

3. Choreography fees for your dancers solo, duet, trio or ensemble for your choreography and music. GDMA will make you aware of choreography fee totals once total number of dancers per group are finalized. For solo/ duet/triosand ensembles, fees are split between the dancers. Dancers who want to compete with a solo/duet/trio may schedule their "company private lessons" with their teacher at their own convenience. At least five 30 min lessons are required to learn choreography and clean routine. Additional lessons are recommended for ultimate results.

Q. How do I sign up for the Performance Company/Competition Track?

First, decide whether your dancer would like to join the Jazz competition track, the Lyrical/Contemporary Competition Track, or both. Then select the classes you will enroll in based on the recommendations below for Fall 2015 and technique level. Remember in order to be part of the Company you are required to register for ALL THREE classes listed below. Don't forget to plan on attending the "Meet & Greet Placement Rehearsal" with dance teacher Abbie Taylor on August 23rd at 2pm! Dancers, be prepared to perform short movement exercises so that Abbie can see how you move (dress in Dance attire).

Q. Why does my dancer have to wait X minutes between classes?

Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated. We put together the best schedule possible considering many variables. If your dancer does have a break in between classes, we suggest using this time for a dinner break or homework time. Please keep in mind that schedules may be different next session.
